Microstimulation-evoked neural responses in visual cortex are depth dependent

چکیده

BackgroundCortical visual prostheses often use penetrating electrode arrays to deliver microstimulation the cortex. To optimize placement within cortex, neural responses at different cortical depths must first be understood.ObjectiveWe investigated how evoked by in cortex varied with depth, of both stimulation and response.MethodsA 32-channel single shank array was inserted into primary anaesthetized rats, such that it spanned all layers. Microstimulation currents up 14 μA (single biphasic pulse, 200 μs per phase) applied spanning 1600 μm, while simultaneously recording activity on channels a response window 2.25–11 ms.ResultsStimulation elicited elevated neuronal firing rates Compared deep sites, superficial sites responded higher given current had lower thresholds. The laminar spread across depth depended line anatomical models.ConclusionStimulation layers evokes local lowest thresholds, most column. In conjunction perceptual reports, these data suggest optimal for has electrodes positioned 2/3, top layer 5.

Contextually evoked object-specific responses in human visual cortex.

Human visual recognition processes are remarkably robust and can function effectively even under highly degraded viewing conditions. Contextual information may play a critical role in such circumstances. Here, we provide neurophysiological evidence that contextual cues can elicit object-specific neural responses, which have hitherto been believed to be based on intrinsic cues alone. Specificall...

Complex Movements Evoked by Microstimulation of Precentral Cortex

Electrical microstimulation was used to study primary motor and premotor cortex in monkeys. Each stimulation train was 500 ms in duration, approximating the time scale of normal reaching and grasping movements and the time scale of the neuronal activity that normally accompanies movement. This stimulation on a behaviorally relevant time scale evoked coordinated, complex postures that involved m...

Visual evoked responses in diabetes.

In view of the conflicting evidence concerning prolongation of the VERs in diabetes, pattern reversal VERs were performed on 60 diabetic inpatients. Only in one patient was the VER unequivocally delayed without some other explanation and in 2 other patients it was prolonged in association with proliferative retinopathy. In the latter instance the latency may have been increased by involvement o...

BOLD Responses in Human Primary Visual Cortex are Insensitive to Substantial Changes in Neural Activity

The relationship between blood oxygenation level dependent-functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD-fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) metrics were explored using low-level visual stimuli known to elicit a rich variety of neural responses. Stimuli were either perceptually isoluminant red/green or luminance-modulated black/yellow square-wave gratings with spatial frequencies of 0.5, 3, an...

Changes in Visual Receptive Fields with Microstimulation of Frontal Cortex

The influence of attention on visual cortical neurons has been described in terms of its effect on the structure of receptive fields (RFs), where multiple stimuli compete to drive neural responses and ultimately behavior. We stimulated the frontal eye field (FEF) of passively fixating monkeys and produced changes in V4 responses similar to known effects of voluntary attention. Subthreshold FEF ...
